RHODE ISLAND SPCA

About Us

Founded in 1870, the Rhode Island SPCA is the oldest nonprofit animal welfare organization in the state of Rhode Island and the third oldest in the country. We provide adoption and rehoming services, veterinary care, humane education, training support and pet owner assistance programs. The Rhode Island SPCA is also the only organization in the state that can legally investigate and prosecute cases of animal cruelty and neglect and takes an active role in legislative matters concerning the welfare of all animals in our state.

Supporting the Rhode Island SPCA

As a private, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, it does not receive any local, state or federal funding nor is it affiliated with any national humane organization. It relies on donations from individuals, businesses, and foundations to provide critical programs and services for the animals and people in the community.  Donations should be addressed to the Rhode Island SPCA. The RISPCA is not affiliated with the ASPCA.

Programs and Services

Re-Homing and Adoption Services

The Rhode Island SPCA is an open admissions animal shelter. We accept the weak, the sick, the disabled, the abused, the abandoned, and all those in need of a second chance. The Rhode Island SPCA is home to more than just dogs and cats. At any given time we may have rabbits, ferrets, birds, or other small animals. Is your new best friend waiting for you? The only way to find out is to visit us today!

Animal Cruelty Investigation Services

The Rhode Island SPCA is the only non-profit, animal rescue organization in the state that is legally able to investigate and prosecute cases of animal cruelty and neglect. We receive thousands of complaints of animal cruelty each year. We will speak with anyone who has a concern for the welfare of an animal and advise them on the best course of action.

The Society is charged with the sole purpose of protecting animal life in all situations and crusading for the rights and welfare of all animals great and small through legal, educational, and investigative means.

Humane Education

Started in 1872, the Rhode Island SPCA is one of the pioneers of Humane Education. We offer programs to local schools, youth and adult groups. It strives to teach people of all ages to understand and care for the animals in our lives and foster compassion, respect and empathy for all living things.

Volunteer Program

The Rhode Island SPCA cares for over 2,000 dogs, cats and small animals each year. Volunteers assist with dog walking, cat socialization, clerical work, special events and fundraising activities.

Caring for the People and the Animals in our Community

The Marvin Fund

Through the Marvin fund, we offer medical assistance for the pets of many impoverished, disabled and elderly individuals who otherwise could not afford to care for them. To date, the Marvin Fund has helped over 4000 people and pets.

Your Contribution Saves Lives

Your tax deductible contributions allow us to continue our important work of giving shelter to homeless animals, prosecuting cases of animal cruelty and neglect, offering assistance to needy pet owners and implementing humane education programs throughout the state and much more. The RISPCA receives no government funding and relies on generous contributions from individuals like you in order to continue our mission.

Thanks to your support, we have continued to “Speak for Those Who Cannot Speak for Themselves” for over 150 years.
