Mini was a very neglected Chihuahua who was found at only a few weeks of age. A concerned party contacted the RISPCA about Mini because they thought she was weak and thin. Little did they know that they were saving this little puppy's life. We investigated the complaint and found this teeny little puppy severely underweight at 13 oz., dehydrated and barely able to stand. We immediately seized Mini, plucking her from the jaws of death and rushed her to a nearby veterinary clinic, where we were told she would not have lived another 24 hours without intervention. Mini had to be bottle fed by one of our dedicated staff members and soon gained weight and strength. Mini's owner wanted Mini back so she could "sell her," but instead was convicted of animal cruelty, paid a stiff fine and lost ownership of Mini. Mini is now a rambunctious little dog who lives with our Volunteer Coordinator, Liz,who so lovingly nursed her back to health.

Peanut was a nine month old Chihuahua who was found abandoned at the front door of the RISPCA with five broken bones.Further examination revealed that Peanut had pins in both of his hind legs from previous injuries. The microchip found in Peanut, allowed us to track down one of Peanut's previous owners. The investigation was a complicated matter, but eventually the owner confessed to harming Peanut. Peanut was confiscated by the RISPCA , made a full recovery and was adopted out.
Maggie the Springer Spaniel was being punished for messing inside the house. For her “punishment,” Maggie was kept in a garage for two months where she was deprived of food, which led to severe emaciation with “little if any body fat." This punishment also resulted in the conviction of her owner Keith J. Johnson who pleaded no contest to two counts of animal abuse for withholding food and water. He received 1 year probation and 100 hours community service. A big thank you to Gloucester Police and Animal Control Officer Gary Hopkins for a job well done. Maggie has fully recovered and has been adopted into a safe and loving home.
Stretch was adopted at 7 weeks of age as a Christmas present to three children. The 8 year old boy had double wrapped an elastic band around a small paw, which cut off the blood supply. Two days after Christmas, the parents noticed the smell and swelling of the rear paw.It had began to rot and became swollen to three times normal size. Stretch was brought to the RISPCA, and relinquished by the owners. His left rear leg had to be amputated and he has had to learn to walk on three legs. He was adopted by a lady from Cape Cod, who drove all the way just to see him when she heard his story.

Jane Walker received a $300 fine and lost ownership of her dog, who was severely emaciated. Thanks to the city of Bristol for moving forward with this conviction. The dog recovered nicely and was eventually adopted into a loving home.
Smurfette is a sweet little kitty that was spray painted blue by a juvenile boy. A mail carrier saw Smurfette and contacted the Providence Police as well as the RISPCA.Because of the fast and thorough work of the Providence Police, as well as the $500 reward for information provided by the RISPCA, a witness came forward and the juvenile was identified. Smurfette was held at the RISPCA for treatment for her exposure to the toxic spray paint, which was in her eyes and airways. Once she was healthy, she was adopted by a loving family and is now safe and happy! A big thank you to Providence Police and Animal Control for their hard work!
