Delta Society's Pet Partners Program trains volunteers and screens volunteers and their pets
for visiting animal programs in hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, schools and other facilities.

The Process
First the human member of the team is required to participate in the Pet Partners Team training.
The training is completed by attending a 1 day workshop or by purchasing the home study program
through the Delta Society website at www.deltasociety.org

To be eligible, the human team member must be a minimum of 10 years old
and canines must be a minimum of 1 year of age.
An animal may have multiple handlers, but each handler must go through the training.
If your companion animal was adopted, the animal needs to be a part of your family
for a minimum of 6 months.

Once you have attended the training, you are eligible to participate in the evaluation.
The evaluation is conducted with a licensed Pet Partners Team Evaluator and consists of 2 parts,
skills and aptitude. The skills portion of the evaluation is modeled after the AKC Canine Good Citizen
test with minor changes. If you are unfamiliar with the CGC, please check their website. Practicing these skills
prior to the evaluation is strongly encouraged.
The CGC information can be found at the AKC website, www.akc.org.

The aptitude portion is a combination of scenarios in which the exercises flow from one to another.
During the aptitude test, the handler and animal should interact with the evaluator and assistants
as if they were visiting a facility. The handler should be able to work with his or her pet partner while at the same
time interacting socially on their visit.
A team consists of a human and an animal.
If more than one individual wishes to be a Pet Partner with the same animal, then each "Team" will
require an evaluation.
Once the evaluation is successfully completed, you can submit the paperwork
and fee to the Delta Society to become a registered Pet Partner.

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT IT TAKES A SPECIAL ANIMAL TO BECOME A PET ASSISTED THERAPY PET.
ALTHOUGH AT HOME YOUR PET MAY BE FRIENDLY AND SOCIAL, HE OR SHE MAY NOT MEET ALL OF THE REQUIREMENTS
TO BECOME REGISTERED WITH THE DELTA SOCIETY.
Registered Pet Partners are encouraged to join Marvin's Paw Patrol at the Rhode Island SPCA.
We will provide you with a list of facilities interested in visits from Pet Partners.
